Mimso went dark on December 15th due to a complete hardware failure. Here is the full story of what went wrong, why the services aren't returning, and the shift in focus towards SYNK Radio and this new project hub.

So here's the deal. Mimso went dark on December 15th. Complete hardware failure.

I've spent the past week figuring out what comes next. Turns out, I still want a place to share updates about my projects. That's why you're reading this now.

What happened to Mimso?

Hardware died. Simple as that.

Everything I was running crashed at once. The server just gave up. I tried salvaging what I could, but most of the storage was completely fried. What survived? I'm using it as my daily driver now.

Bringing Mimso back isn't realistic. The recovered hardware can't handle running multiple services simultaneously. Think trying to operate a data center on a laptop. Not happening.

Why build this blog?

I still create stuff. Always have.

Mimso might be gone, but my other projects aren't going anywhere. I needed a central hub where people could see what I'm building. Something simple. Something that won't disappear if a single server fails.

This blog sits on separate infrastructure. It's designed to stick around.

What I'm working on now

My main focus these days? SYNK Radio.

It's a 24/7 online radio station. We stream UK garage, drum and bass, and hardcore around the clock. Real people curate the music. No algorithms deciding what plays next.

We also built SYNK Music. It's a Discord bot that pulls from YouTube and SoundCloud. Completely free. No premium tiers. No usage caps. Just music when you want it. Built on Lavalink for stable playback, using Discord's new components v2 for controls.

Check out the station at synkradio.co.uk. Grab the bot from top.gg if Discord's your thing.

What's still alive from Mimso

ipapi.mimso.co.uk remains operational. That IP geolocation API runs on completely different infrastructure. It survived because it wasn't anywhere near the failed hardware. I'll maintain it until that VPS expires. Use it while it's here.

What's next for this space

This becomes my project hub. Updates on SYNK Radio. New tools I build. Experiments worth sharing. Whatever I'm working on lands here first.

SYNK Radio and SYNK Music aren't technically under Mimso. They're my projects. That's what matters. This blog exists to centralize everything I do in one spot.

Lessons from the failure

Backups matter. I learned that the hard way.

I didn't back up Mimso. Rookie mistake. When the hardware died, everything went with it. No recovery possible. That won't happen again.

Running your own infrastructure teaches you fast. Uptime matters. Redundancy matters. Having a plan B definitely matters.

Two weeks seems short for a project's lifespan. But those two weeks taught me more about server management than months of reading ever could.

Moving forward

I'm not stopping. Mimso failed, sure. But failure's part of building things.

This blog represents something different. Less ambitious than hosting services for others. More focused on sharing what I create. Sustainable for the long term.

Thanks for sticking around. If you used Mimso, I appreciate the trust you showed. If you're new here, welcome aboard.
